The Makers And Materials That Shape Moon House: Meet Reclaimed Wood Source

At Moon House, every choice is intentional. We believe a home should be more than walls and structure — it should carry history, meaning, and soul. That’s why our partnership with Juan Bruera, founder of Reclaimed Wood Source, has been so meaningful. His work with reclaimed lumber goes beyond material: it is an act of storytelling, craftsmanship, and preservation.

A Life Rooted in Nature & History

Juan grew up in Venice Beach, where days were spent in the water and long afternoons with his grandfather sparked a lifelong appreciation for the natural world. Together they explored the coastline of Malibu and Playa del Rey, unearthing artifacts that whispered of lives lived long before. Those early discoveries instilled in him a fascination with history and the beauty of what endures.

Building A Legacy Of Craft

In his early twenties, Juan stumbled into reclaimed wood and was immediately drawn to its beauty and sustainability. What began as a small dirt-lot business has grown into a full-service showroom and milling operation, now running strong for over 16 years. His passion lies in uncovering wood with a past — boards salvaged from barns, homes, and warehouses, often dating back more than a century.

The Beauty of Wood with a Past

Every board Juan sources is singular. Salvaged from barns, warehouses, and historic homes, much of it dates back over a century. These planks have been cut by hand, weathered by time, and marked by the touch of those who built with them. Unlike new lumber, they arrive with imperfections that speak of a life already lived — texture, patina, and an energy that mass production can never replicate.

A Shared Vision with Moon House

When Juan met designer Sarah Carter, the collaboration felt effortless. Both are guided by the same values: thoughtful living, sustainability, and design that carries soul. Together, they see reclaimed wood not simply as a material, but as a way of weaving history into new spaces, grounding the modern home in something timeless.

A Material with Soul

Reclaimed wood demands patience. Nails are pulled one-by-one, surfaces are restored with care, and each board is prepared to the highest standard. This meticulous process ensures not only beauty, but longevity. Many of these planks have already endured 50–100 years in service — and they are ready to last another century within the walls of a new home.
